Sealing LED Assemblies
Sealing Gaskets and LED Sealing Materials are often used for sealing electronic enclosures and protecting LED assemblies from the environment. Care must be taken in LED assemblies as volatile condensables present in some materials can attack the delicate coatings in the LED itself.

What are sealing gaskets?
A sealing gasket is a soft material designed to be distorted when applied between hard surfaces which need to be coupled together without leaking gases or liquids. The gasket needs to be mechanically held together to form a compression of the gasket. The selection of the correct material determines its suitability to perform in demanding applications such as:

Which sealing gaskets are best for LEDs?
Materials Direct offer LED friendly gasket and pad materials which do not give off condensable chemicals which can be deposited on the LED itself. Many materials can do this and if it happens the phosphors can be destroyed or altered which drastically affect the light output and colour output. This mostly applied to hermetically sealed LED applications such as Roadside lighting, street lighting, Military, medical aerospace underwater applications. Basically anywhere that the LED unit is completely sealed the gases from the materials used build up with heat and become airborne which then with cooling condenses onto the surfaces within the unit.
