Shape the Light emitted from your LEDs
LED Optical Materials are a broad range of films or foils designed to shape the light emitted from a LED assembly. Many LED applications require the Light to be shaped by diffusion, reflection, incidence creating beam angles.
Here at Materials Direct, we understand which materials are best for optimising the quality, performance, and shape of your LED Lighting. Therefore we provide our clients with the highest quality LED optical materials, custom cut to meet your specification.
LED Protection
Protecting your LEDs can improve the quality and lifespan of your lighting design. Environmental dangers and moisture can cause damage to your LEDs. Dust also causes a lack of brightness and result in heat build-up.
You can protect your LEDs with optical plastic sheet materials 1mm-5mm thickness such as polycarbonate etc, specially designed to prolong the life of your LED lighting Systems.
Clear protective materials are often manufactured into custom covers for LED applications used specifically to environmentally seal against moisture, dust, or chemical ingress.

Custom Light Diffusers
Light emitted from an LED is typically very directional as it is a type of Laser. The light however can be conditioned to become homogenized into a unified light output using light diffusers. This will remove or reduce the “spotting” effect of the LED.
Light diffusers can give your LED lights a more consistent and balanced brightness, giving them a more even look. Our lighting diffusing materials can be custom cut to any shape, size, or design that you require.
Reflective Lighting Materials
Reflective Lighting materials used in the LED assembly can assist with the light output as well as blank out unwanted views of complementary electronic components such as connectors, resistors, and control IC’s.
There is a high demand for brighter, more efficient LED lighting, and with reflective lighting materials, you can achieve a more vibrant and enhanced LED assembly.
Anti-Glare Films
Anti-Glare films can also be used to assist diffusion if area lighting requires it. Whilst there is a desire for brightness, glare can cause lights to be unpleasant to look at, or cause strain on the eyes.
With Anti-glare materials, you can prevent glare without compromising the level of light you wish to display. You can still achieve fantastic brightness with anti-glare protection.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I reduce the glare of my LED lighting?
Glare reduction films are very effective at reducing unwanted glare from many light sources. LED’s can be particularly troublesome for producing glare and the thin film anti-glare materials can be custom cut to suit your application. The anti-Glare film can be used in combination with diffuser films so long as they are not optically joined together. For instance, an air gap should be present between the 2 films for them to be effective.
How do I maximise the light output of my LED lighting?
Reduction of light loss is key to any lighting design. The use of high-efficiency films will help to do this. Also maximizing the output can be improved by using high-quality reflective films to help guide as much of the light out of the unit you have designed.
What are LED Optical Materials and why do I need them?
Optical films and plastic sheets are available on Materials direct to:
- Protect the LED assemblies from the environment
- Shape the light output
- Diffuse or reflect the light
- Decorative designs to help with styling
How can I manipulate the shape of my LED lighting?
Materials Direct offers materials from leading brands of Optical Films. The light can be altered into elliptical patterns for instance to wall wash or light up the isles in a supermarket or warehouse. Various beam angles can be achieved as well as deflecting light by 20 Degrees from the vertical. Many more variations are available.
How do I defuse the spottyness of my LED lighting?
The use of diffusing films can homogenize the light output to varying amounts. The distance of the film from the LED and the amount of diffusing should be tried as it is a personal choice of requirement which needs to be tested to assure fitness for your purpose.
When Do LED lights need mechanical protection?
Most all LED lighting fixtures will need an optical cover over them to protect the assemblies from the environment. In particular external applications are exposed to weather and UV from the sun. Dust and chemical ingress is also a danger to the destruction of the assemblies. Materials Direct supply many types of plastic lens covers to protect your assemblies.
How do I protect my LED lights?
LED assemblies will need a variety of films to provide different protections. Optical covers to guard against the environment, Thermal interface films to manage heat build-up reducing light output leading to colour changing or reduced life. The LED assembly may also need EMI protection against incoming RFI or to project against emitting EMI.
Do I need special LED lights in order to use your products?
We offer many differing Optical solutions for UV, IR, and visible light spectrum applications. Medical, Horticultural, Automotive, Aerospace, and others widely use our services to assist in the construction of their LED lighting applications.
