Die Cutting is a means by which custom-shaped parts can be converted from sheets of base materials by imprinting under pressure the shape of the part made by a tool known as a Die.
The die is made from a ply or perspex board which has a series of sharp blades inserted into it which matches the required part design.
At Materials Direct, our Dies are manufactured by cutting the ply or perspex with a laser to produce a slot that houses the cutting blades.
This creates an extremely accurate and repeatable tool when high-volume parts are required. Holes can also be die-cut with the use of circular punches inserted into the boards.
Punch press die cutting is a traditional method for cutting thin materials using a bladed tool. Whilst this method is good for medium to high volumes it does involve the use of a tool.
However, as a promise, there is never a tooling charge when ordering from Materials Direct.
It remains the choice of Materials direct as to using this method of manufacturing as it is usually more suited for higher volume customer requirements.
A Die takes normally 2-3 days to produce and has a life of typically 10,000 “hits” in the press until it is worn out. The blades are not normally serviced as this is not economical, therefore we never charge for a replacement Die.
We would also replace a die tool free of charge for any inadvertent damage caused during production or storage of the production Die.
Materials Direct is approaching this market in a way that is easy to order and specify in Electronics across all industries. Customers who need a certain brand of material that does not appear on the site can apply for us to add this stock to the site’s portfolio based on potential usage.

The main problem for design engineers and purchasing has been until now the quick supply of parts as often the custom pad is one of the last items to be specified in the design of an Electronic assembly.
Materials Direct not only provides an instant quote but gives the buyer the offer of uploading their custom design for it to be manufactured within 24hours if the material is in stock.

The speed at which we can produce parts makes Die Cutting suitable for both medium and large volume orders.
The maximum size of Die Cutting tool is 750mm x 750mm and contains multiple “impressions “ of the desired parts thereby improving productivity.
The biggest advantage of Die Cutting is that it is repeatable once the custom cut tool is made. Therefore should we need to repeat your order, we can do so more efficiently.
All of our rotary Die cutting services are carried out by experienced and trained professionals who have a high understanding of how the machines work and how they should be used.
Materials Direct will also only source materials from trusted Brands.
'Very fast reply, very good order following and delivery in 24H. to recap a very good experience with Materials Direct for a very urgent need. I recommend a lot.'
'Having the ability to be supplied with precision cut materials for prototypes within 2 days has been excellent!’
'We have the need for small to medium batch sizes of various technical materials and Materials Direct have been highly responsive to our urgent needs'
‘We have had to change our designs in the development stages three times. Materials Direct did not charge for these changes as the sizes stayed the same. Excellent!’
‘Precision and high quality of parts received have been consistently to a high standard.’
'Buying online with Materials Direct has proven to be more efficient in time and deliveries, especially when scheduling future orders.’
Each sector has its own unique requirements and specifications. Materials Direct works to ensure that each sector we supply to, receives the highest quality and best-performing products in relation to their industry and specific need.
The Aerospace industry demands the highest performing, most reliable technical materials to protect their electronic assemblies.
Automotive applications range from Engine management systems to motor drive controllers and custom-made gaskets and pads.
Industrial electronics are robust, have long lifetimes, are cost-sensitive, and suitable for use within difficult environments.
Sufficient thermal management in LED lighting can preserve longevity, increase reliability and optimise performance.
Materials used in military applications need to be of the highest quality and performance, often very rugged to very exacting standards.
Coupling discreet heat-generating semiconductors to heatsinks remains commonplace in power supply assemblies.
